Chapter 1

Jun wandered down the passage of the train, his fingers lightly coiled around Nino’s who was walking right behind him as they searched for an empty carriage. They hadn’t seen the other three at the station when boarding had started so had decided to go on ahead to secure a carriage for the five of them.
“This one’s free” Nino had barely finished his sentence before he shoved his boyfriend through the door into the vacant carriage, pushing him down onto the cushioned seats. He gave Jun no opportunity to question his actions as he crushed their lips together in a heated embrace, practically climbing on top of the taller guy and forcing him down further into the seat. Jun wasn’t all that shocked by his boyfriend’s forwardness and spontaneity. The two of them had been dating for a little under two years and in that time Jun had discovered Nino’s unconcerned attitude towards what they did and where. There was no surprise in having Nino straddle him on the train seat while his small hands slid under the material of his robes to run his palms over the toned muscles of Jun’s stomach and chest. It was quite a regular occurrence actually.
Preoccupied with each other, neither boy cared to notice when the door to their carriage opened. Though they did hear the familiar voices of their friends.
“Ooh, second base already. That’s a record for the train, ne” Aiba grinned as he peeked over the shoulders of his other friends to spy into the carriage. Sho pushed him back and tried to cover his eyes from the rather indecent sight.
“This isn’t a private carriage guys” Sho remarked from the door, a touch of annoyance mixing with the embarrassment in his voice. It was far from the first time he’d caught his friends in a compromising position but that didn’t make finding them like this any less awkward.
“Can we still go in or should we find another one?” Ohno asked, seemingly unchanged by the passionate display in front of him.
“Look at that, would you? They haven’t even noticed us” Sho sighed exasperatedly. “It’s like we’re not even here.”
“We’ve noticed you” Nino grumbled against Jun’s lips. He was reluctant to break the kiss but Jun soon pushed the smaller guy off him, pulling his shirt back down while unsuccessfully trying to hide the blush forming on his face. Nino pouted at the separation but quickly manoeuvred himself around so he was lying with his head on Jun’s lap, pleased when he felt the latter’s fingers start to thread through his hair. He stared at his three friends still standing in the doorway. “Show’s over. Are you coming in or not?”
Aiba pranced inside with Ohno right behind, and Sho too after another groan. He pulled the door shut behind them.
Aiba sat opposite Nino, practically bouncing up and down on the seat. “How far would you guys have gone if we hadn’t showed up?” he asked enthusiastically. Sho groaned, Jun looking away uncomfortably at how inappropriately curious Aiba could be.
Nino shrugged, opening his mouth to answer before Sho cut in. “Don’t encourage him. I beg you.”
Jun coughed softly as he thought to change the subject. “How was everyone’s holiday?”
There were a few shrugs and mumbles from the group, most giving the short but expected response about how nothing overly exciting had happened. Aiba seemed the only one smiling eagerly as he rambled on about the numerous eventful happenings of his holiday.
He was midway through recounting his attempt to fly by charming household items. “I almost did it too” he was saying. “I was hovering a bit, I thought for sure it was going to work until the vacuum unplugged itself.” He turned to Nino. “It would have been so much fun to have both of us try it. How come you didn’t come over?”
Nino sat up. “Cause I was in America.” His answer made all four of his friends turn to stare in astonishment. Nino wasn’t one to travel, they knew. He was usually content to stay at home for the whole school break.
“Why were you in America?” Ohno asked.
“There was this magic convention being staged in LA and the keynote speaker was Takeuchi Yuko” he said as a wide grin spreading across his features.
“Eh? Isn’t she that famous witch you told me about before?” Aiba exclaimed, while Sho looked rather bewildered beside him.
Nino nodded enthusiastically. “Creator of the Fiendfyre charm and youngest witch to ever encounter and defeat Inferi solo.”
“You really met her?”
“Did you talk to her?
“Is she pretty?”
Jun listened as his friends zealously bombarded Nino with questions, to which he was more than willing to provide answers to. He couldn’t help but feel a little put off by the way in which his boyfriend spoke about this Takeuchi-san. There was something about the way his eyes shone at the mention of her name and the goofy smile that was fixed on his face throughout the whole conversation that put Jun on edge. He wasn’t jealous. Just confused.
The rest of the train ride was filled with meaningless banter between the five of them, with Jun feeling a lot more at ease as the conversation grew further and further away from Nino’s fanboy trip to LA, albeit a little baffled by the overwhelming possessive feeling that surged through him when Nino leant over to rest his head on Jun’s shoulder. All in all Jun felt relieved when the train finally arrived at the Hogwarts station. It was the start of another year. Amongst the frustrating studies and boring lectures from subjects that he was less than interested in, he could relax in the company of his friends and boyfriend. It was familiar, it was routine. No surprises. No different from any other year really. Or so he had hoped.
In hindsight, Jun really should have noticed something at Hogwarts was very different from all their previous years. The atmosphere had changed considerably, more so with the mysterious arrival of two other transport vessels.
“Hogwarts has been chosen to host a legendary event. The Tri-Wizard Tournament” Headmaster Johnny announced soon after the first years had been sorted and the rest of the students had settled down in preparation for the usual feast to begin. A murmured hum filled the hall as the students whispered to one another about the unexpected event that had been brought to their school.
The headmaster silenced the hall with a single hand gesture. “Now for those of you who do not know, the tri-wizard tournament brings together three schools for a series of magical contests” he continued his explanation. “From each school a single contestant is selected to compete. Now let me be clear, if chosen you stand alone. And trust me when I say these contests are not for the faint hearted, but more of that later. For now please join me in greeting the proud sons of Durmstrang and their high master Nakamura-san.”
The Hogwarts students watched in anticipation as the doors of the Great Hall opened and a group of young men walked through with powerful strides. There was silence throughout the hall as they marched in perfect coordination, breaking out into a run halfway down the aisle while an older, somewhat intimidating looking man followed them through the doors. The two lines in which they had been walking dispersed as many of the men flipped and performed an array of impressive tricks. The performance came to an end, landing with unrivalled accuracy and strength, as their high master reached the front to greet the Hogwarts headmaster.
“And now” Johnny-san continued when the Durmstrang boys had taken their seats at the end of the Slytherin table situation on the far right. “Please welcome the lovely ladies of the Beauxbaton Academy of magic and their headmistress Kuroki-san.”
The doors opened again and a collection of elegant ladies came prancing through. They were dressed highly in silk dresses bound tight around the waist. They waltzed down the corridor, dancing up the aisle in a well-rehearsed performance. The mouths of almost every boy hung low as they watched the provocative yet classy dance. Their performance consisted of pirouettes and aerobically impressive twists as well as a unique combination of dance and gymnastics that had all eyes in the room completely fixated on the sight that had entered. Their headmistress, an even sharper dressed woman with contrastingly soft features sauntered after them. A stream of fire suddenly burst forth from the doors, coiling and snaking its way through the air like a serpent, before vanishing in a puff of embers. Beneath the display walked a pretty young woman with a shining smile.
Jun felt his blood run cold upon recognizing the girl. He couldn’t help but sneak a glance over at the Slytherin table. Sure enough Nino had noticed her as well and looked as though he could barely contain his excitement at the prospect of her being there. Jun’s hands clenched into fists, knuckles cracking with stress, but he forced the tension out of his body. It still wasn’t jealously, Jun told himself. What was there to be jealous of? Nino was his boyfriend. He had no interest in girls, so it wouldn’t be logical for Jun to feel any jealously towards her.
The girls took their seats at the end of the far left Ravenclaw table. Once everyone was settled in and the excitement of the other school’s entrances had died down, Johnny-san stepped up to the podium once more.
“Eternal glory awaits the student who wins the tri-wizard tournament” the headmaster proclaimed. “But to do this, that student must survive three tasks. Three extremely dangerous tasks. For this reason the ministry has seen fit to impose a new rule. For their own safety, no student under the age of fifteen shall be allowed to put forth their name for the tri-wizard tournament. This decision is final.”
The hall erupted with derision from many of the Hogwarts students that were underage. Jun looked thoughtful as he realized he had only just made the cut for the age limit, his birthday having only been two days prior to the start of term. Johnny-san watched the students voicing their opposition for a moment before putting his wand to his throat and yelling, “Silence!” The amplified shout was effective in silencing the protests. With the hall now quiet and filled with anticipation, Johnny-san redirected his wand towards the container that had been resting behind him. As the magic was cast over it, the box melded into a goblet containing a strange and eerie blue flame.
“The goblet of fire. Anyone wishing to submit themselves for the tournament merely write their name upon a piece of parchment and throw it in the flame before this hour on Thursday night. Do not do so lightly, for if chosen there is no turning back. As from this moment the tri-wizard tournament has begun.”

---

“So who do you think is crazy enough from our school to put their name in?” Sho was asking as the five of them made their way to the Great Hall. It had been two days since the goblet of fire was unveiled and it was all anyone in the school could talk about. This was the first free period all of them had together so they’d decided they would go and see the possible contenders.
“Don’t know about crazy, but I’d say either Yokoyama-kun or Murakami-kun would be stupid enough to try” Nino remarked as said two fourth years rushed ahead of them into the hall.
“Are the tasks really as dangerous as they say?” Aiba wondered aloud.
“You thinking of putting your name in?” asked Ohno.
Sho stopped walking and turned his head sharply to look at them. “Don’t tell me you’re considering entering. Masaki, people have died in this tournament.”
“I was just—”
“No” Sho cut him off firmly. “You’re not entering.” His tone left little room to argue with him. Aiba bowed his head obediently and continued walking, sulking slightly as Sho kept a close eye on him even as they entered the hall.
“Anyone would think they’re dating” Nino whispered jokingly to Jun as they took a seat to watch the competitors enter.
Jun smiled but his face quickly fell again when Nino’s attention was drawn to the newest person to walk through the doors. She moved quickly across the room on light feet, stealing the focus of many in the hall. She reached the goblet, stretching her lithe arm out to toss her parchment into the flame. It flared up a bit, turning a shade lighter before returning to its original colour in acceptance of her submission.
Nino straightened as much as he could, sitting right on the edge of his seat as he tried to locate the best angle to see her from, unaware how far forward he had crept until his backside slipped off the bench and he landed rather ungracefully on the floor.
As Takeuchi turned on her heel, she flashed the five of them a kind smile. Still on the floor, Nino seemed incapable of pulling his gaze away from her even as she had disappeared out the door.
His friends had all observed his strange besotted behaviour with much bewilderment. They’d never seen him like this before, allowing himself to look and act like a love-struck idiot just for a split-second of attention from someone.
“She’s amazing isn’t she” Nino sighed happily, still staring at the door in the hope that she might reappear. He seemed completely oblivious to the worried gazes his friends were exchanging as well as the resentment that was almost radiating off Jun beside him. Nino sighed again, leaning back to rest his head against Jun’s thigh. “She’ll win for sure.”
Unable to take it anymore, Jun hastily rose to his feet in one swift motion that jolted Nino’s head off his leg. “I need some air” he muttered darkly before storming towards the exit.
Nino watched him go, tipping his head in confusion at his boyfriend’s sudden departure. Aiba bit his lip and glanced at the others, questioning whether they should do or say anything. Sho shook his head. It was unfortunate that Nino was remaining unusually ignorant in such a situation but it was not their place to meddle in their friends’ relationship. Ohno frowned sadly as Jun exited the hall, doors slamming shut behind him with definitive assurance that he would not be returning.
Jun paced away from the Great Hall. He wasn’t sure where he was going. All he knew was that he needed to get away from Nino and his infatuation with someone else. Jun gritted his teeth as he recalled the smitten face of his boyfriend directed at her. Was he doing it on purpose? Did he even know what he was doing and more importantly that he was so cruelly doing it in front of Jun? They were supposed to be together, Jun thought angrily, but since their make-out session on the train, Nino hadn’t even looked twice at Jun. It was confusing. It was frustrating, and it made Jun unsure of his next move. Should he break up with Nino? He didn’t want that. The truth was he’d never been happier since they had gotten together. Maybe he ought to talk to his boyfriend about all this. Jun tensed. What if Nino told him he was no longer interested, that his heart lay with Takeuchi-san now instead? Jun shuddered at the thought. He knew he wouldn’t be able to bear that.
His gaze wandered back towards the Great Hall. There was really only one thing he could think of doing that would win his Nino back. It was foolish and it was dangerous, but it was the only way.

---

As Jun moved silently through the hall in the dead of night, his only thoughts were of Nino—his reason for doing this. It was jealousy. There was no point in lying to himself anymore. Of course it was jealousy, he just figured he’d never have to deal with such an issue with Nino.
The goblet was resting at the far end of the room, glowing brighter with every step that Jun took towards it. Johnny-san’s warning and the words of his friends were ringing through his mind as he approached, the parchment gripped tightly between his fingers feeling like a lead weight. He didn’t want to die but he wouldn’t lose Nino. Not like this.
With eyes narrowed determinedly, he threw the parchment into the fire. It sizzled and burned, vanishing under the blue blaze in approval of his name. It was done. There was no turning back.
