Chapter 8

Alighting in the Janeite star system, Sho was never so glad to see sophisticated civilization than he was in that moment. He had to admit he did not think they would make it. Between the kidnapping incident and Jun and Nino still being at each other’s throats throughout the entire voyage, Sho had essentially given up all hope that they would reach Janeite. Yet here they were. The Zero-G was descending on the outskirts of the imperial city, the civilized society a sight for sore eyes after all the lower-class districts they had witnessed and lodged in throughout the course of their trip.
Sho stood at the helm alongside Aiba as the man brought the airship down for a steady landing. They were having to settle on the more remote outlying regions away from the citadel. Though prince Jun was an honoured and expected guest in the Janeite imperial palace, those travelling alongside him were not. Nino and Aiba were both bandits, ones who had admittedly conducted shady business in the lesser districts of Janeite. Both risked a great deal by coming here and would no doubt be putting the entire peace treaty in jeopardy if they were to be associated with the Amnosian prince. For this reason, the only secure place they could land was in the underpopulated area they were now.
Jun had changed back into his formal wear and tidied up his hair, tying part of it back to keep it from falling in his face. Sho too had made an attempt to straighten his appearance up somewhat before accompanying the prince to the airship door.
“Are you ready sire?” he asked. He was less referring to Jun’s physical preparation and more wanting to ensure his head was of the right mindset for the agreement negotiation they were about to undertake.
Jun nodded but Sho didn’t miss the distant look in his eye. “I just pray no one sees us disembarking from this.”
“We wouldn’t want the prince’s spoiled image to be sullied by being spotted on such an inferior vessel” Nino sneered from where he was leaning with his arms crossed against the archway.
“Just stay on the ship where you can’t be seen” Jun growled in return.
Aiba hastily gestured for his friend not to say such things, begging for him not to retort but was ignored. Nino’s narrowed gaze was focused on Jun alone.
“Embarrassed to be seen with us?”
“You are not worthy to enter even the serving chambers of the imperial palace” spat Jun, much to Sho’s distress as he tried to keep the prince’s temper in check.
Nino’s glare hardened but a slight smirk tugged at his lips. “Wonder how your new allies would take to your association with such filth then.”
“Sire, we really ought to be going” Sho remarked, getting between the two warring men and pushing Jun towards the entrance. Aiba came up to Nino’s side and gave him a quiet smack upside the head. Sho glanced briefly back at the two of them. “You two are best remaining here for now.”
Once outside, Sho let out an exasperated sigh. He was tired of this trifling rivalry. He felt he had aged a couple of years just in the days he had been dealing with the two of them and was beginning to worry he was going to have grey hair by the time they returned to Amnos. It was far too arduous a situation to manage, the dynamics between them seeming to have grown worse with each passing day. Sho was yet to understand Aiba’s reasoning that the two would end up together. He could not see what the other man saw, witnessing the pair’s incessant arguments as little more than a childish conflicting of opinions.
The distance between where the Zero-G had landed and the citadel was close to an hour on foot, a length of time in which had been spent in total silence. Sho could read the complex and absorbed expression on the prince’s face. He prayed Jun was immersed in thoughts of the nearing treaty agreement and not of the bratty pirate they had left behind some time ago. It would do them no favours if Jun were to be irritated and distracted throughout the negotiations.
When they finally arrived at the entrance to the imperial city, guards swarmed them in an instant. Sho was immediately detained. While Jun’s affluent formal attire had been intact and wearable, Sho’s military uniform had long since been damaged beyond salvation. As such he’d been forced to embark on their travel to the Janeite palace in the same raggedy clothing he had worn since before rescuing the prince. Seeing him as an unsuitable and potential threatening person to the both the royal family and high-class citizens that dwelled within the inner city, the guards seized him in seconds of his arrival. Jun stepped forward to the aid of his restrained escort. Several of the guards went to apprehend him as well until they caught sight of the Amnosian crest embroidered on the chest of his garments. They immediately released him and Sho, bowing in respect before accompanying them the rest of the way into the palace.
An assembly was already in progress, with the announcement of the Amnosian prince’s arrival bringing about much anticipation. When Jun entered, Sho was pleased to see his movements mimicked the poised man he had grown up knowing and not the immature disputer he’d felt he had been babysitting for the last two days. His strides were confident, his head held high in a display of the high status he bore. Sho moved to the side to stand alongside the Janeite soldiers but kept a watchful eye on Jun as he approached the front of the room. Upon reaching the head of the assembly, Jun bowed low in respect to the Janeite king and prince before him.
“Prince Jun of Amnos” King Yasuda spoke clear, his words an indication for Jun to lift his head once more. “The citizens of Janeite welcome you.”
“I am grateful to be under your care, your majesty” Jun replied coolly. His tone was polite and deeply respectful but detached of all other emotion.
“It pleases me to see you have arrived safely in our domain.”
“Last we heard you were taken hostage” said prince Hiroki in such a way that made it difficult to determine whether he was being antagonistic or simply straightforward. Either way Jun did not appreciate the tone of voice from the other prince.
“A minor setback” he stated, his own voice becoming somewhat sterner. Sho tensed slightly from where he was. Knowing how wound up Jun already was from the previous quarrelling with Nino, Sho could only hold his breath and hope nothing would push him over the edge. Thankfully the frustration smoothed from Jun’s features after a moment. “My father sends his regards to you and expresses his best wishes for the success of our joint treaty.”
“I’d expect nothing less from the benevolent Amnosian king” Yasuda smiled. There was only sincerity in his words. “For too long our realms have been at odds with one another. The formation of this peace agreement shall finally rectify such gratuitous enmity.”
Jun bowed his head again in agreement. The Janeite king’s declaration concluded the consultation constituent of the assembly. A royal advisor soon brought the official documents to be signed as a written symbol of the treaty that would be bound between their realms. Both Jun and Hiroki stepped up to the marble plinth, signing in unison before shaking hands as a finalizing display of the peace conduct now set upon their two domains.
Having concluded the agreement, Yasuda dismissed the remainder of the assembly. Sho slowly approached Jun. He made sure to keep a respectful distance, ensuring he presented himself as a guard and escort of the Amnosian prince rather than a companion of any sorts. Yasuda and his son both politely bid Jun farewell and bestowed their wishes for his safe return to Amnos. Jun returned the gesture, pleased that the treaty had been made with little difficulty.
There was a loud cry from beyond the closed doors of the assembly hall that drew the attention of the few people who remained inside. Jun and Sho stared at the sealed entrance, curious and apprehensive all at once. The doors swung open as a number of guards jostled the two scraggly young men inside. They were forcefully dragged through and made to kneel before the king and two princes. Jun’s eyes widened at the familiar pair now at his feet. Sho barely managed to stifle his gasp in time, staring down at Aiba and Nino while trying to keep his expression relatively indifferent.
“Apologies for the intrusion, your majesty” the head guard bowed low. “We caught these two thieves slinking around the northern border in a stolen airship.”
“It’s not stolen, it’s ours” Aiba mumbled. The guard tightened his grip on Aiba’s hair, eliciting a small whimper from the man. Nino gave a deep growl but was quickly silenced by a blunt blow to the head from the soldier who was restraining him.
“We didn’t do anything” Nino groaned with a pained wince at the continual throbbing occurring in his head.
Prince Hiroki cringed in disgust at them both. He muttered something under his breath. Jun did not catch all of what he had said but heard fragments about disposing of such filthy trash. His body stiffened, his hands clenching by his side.
Yasuda stared at the two detained men. “Arrest them.” The soldiers holding them immediately started to drag them up to take them away. “They will be put on trial to determine the sentence for their crimes.”
“Sire, we must do something” Sho whispered close to Jun’s ear so that only he would hear.
Jun did not respond, feeling as if all his body systems had suddenly shut down. Paralysed where he stood, it was all Jun could do to watch as Nino and Aiba were dragged away thrashing and screaming. For a split second Nino’s eyes met with Jun’s. Something pleading flashed in their brown depths before his gaze darkened entirely. It was the last and lingering thing Jun saw before the guards pulled the two out of the room, the doors swinging shut a resonating clatter.
