Prologue

“King Yasuda is requesting an audience, without which he is unwilling to establish the new treaty between our domains” the prince announced.
He was currently in the middle of an audience with the Amonsian ruler, and his father, King Satoshi. The Amnosian and Janeite star systems had been in constant conflict with one another for generations, with their rivalry dating back to the age when the five star systems were first divided into different realms. A delicate balance existed, with the Amonsian system having already formed treaties with the other three domains, and now the fourth and final peace agreement was within reach after so long.
King Satoshi nodded softly from where he was seated at the front of the assembly hall. On either side of him were two of his most trusted advisors, as well as a young woman dressed in the finest silk—the prince’s betrothed.
“I suppose there is no other choice then,” the king murmured. “Prepare for our immediate departure.”
“With all due respect, sire” the prince stepped forward, bringing a halt to the movements of those in the hall who had made to do as the king had ordered with utmost haste. “It is without reason for you to accompany me to Janeite. The treaty is to be made between the future rulers. Besides, Amnos needs their king.”
There was silence in the hall following the prince’s words. All eyes seemed to have turned to the king, waiting patiently for the response he would give to his son’s declaration. The king pursed his lips, his forehead creasing slightly as a frown formed across his features.
“I suppose you have a point,” he said, though with much hesitation. He turned to the soldiers standing along the adjacent wall. “Ready your strongest forces and make all necessary preparations for a swift journey to Janeite. You leave at tomorrow at dawn.”
The young prince spoke up again. “That won’t be necessary either. As heir, I am the only one required to make to journey and as such, I plan to go alone.”
Satoshi visibly tensed and a small gasp was heard from lady standing beside him. An audible murmur spread through the hall.
“Jun,” the king’s voice was steady but there was a stern look in his eye as he stared at his son. “Do not say such foolish things.”
“This treaty is an agreement of peace between our kingdoms” prince Jun pointed out sharply. “I highly doubt arriving with a fully armed fleet of Amonsian soldiers would do well to affirm our intentions with King Yasuda. For the sake of the treaty—”
“The treaty has not yet been decided” Satoshi snapped, “and even if you’re safety could be guaranteed in Janeite, you are still required to cross several dangerous domains in order to get there. Going alone is out of the question.”
Their eyes met in an intense but unspoken battle that seemed endlessly drawn out. There was a fierce sense of conflict being emanated from both sides. The relationship between the king and his son had always been somewhat troublesome and there seemed to always be an air of tension between them. They clashed on many occasions, mostly due to their vastly differing views, but now it was felt clearer than ever. It was some time before Jun gave an irritated sigh, tearing his gaze away from his father’s. He clicked his tongue softly.
“Sho” his voice resounded in the expansive hall. A single soldier stumbled forward from the ranks in response to the prince’s call.
“Yes, your highness?”
Jun however paid no regard to him and turned back to the king. “I shall bring one soldier” he declared, gesturing with his head in the direction of Sho, who looked as equally as shocked by Jun’s words as Satoshi did in that moment.
“Eh? B-But sire…”
Sho’s stammered words were overlooked by Jun who turned on his heel and paced out of the hall without so much as glancing back at the stunned expressions of those behind him.
Satoshi’s gaze remained fixed on the door long after Jun had left the room. His mind was racing with worrying thoughts that would not be tamed even by his subdued nature. Deep down he knew he ought not to be surprised by Jun’s perverse decision to go alone; the prince had always been stubborn and independent, even as a child. In a way, the king agreed with his son too. Jun had spoken rightly about what would surely be perceived as a threat should he arrive with many armed soldiers, but it didn’t stop him from believing it was just as foolish to travel so unaided.
The young woman stared after her fiancé before looking to the king, who sat in silence in the aftermath of his son’s abrupt departure.
“You need to do something” she pleaded to him, despite knowing it was not her place to say such things. Even as a lady of noble birth and the intended of a prince, she was still not of a high enough standing to speak in such a manner to the Amonsian ruler. “Stop him! Talk him out of it. Don’t let him go alone.”
The king raised his hand to silence her. She dipped her head in respect and stepped back obediently. Satoshi’s gaze narrowed on the soldier still standing in the middle of the assembly hall, having been left there after the prince had left.
“Sakurai” he spoke the name and watched as the young man jolted slightly before turning to face the one who had addressed him.
“Your majesty” Sho bowed.
King Satoshi eyed him almost curiously. He was young, especially for a fully-fledged solider but Satoshi was well aware of the history the man shared with Jun. Sho had been Jun’s personal guard since they were children. Having noticed they were of very similar ages, Satoshi had assigned the young recruit to be Jun’s attendant in the hopes that they would also become friends. It had been a rocky start to their relationship and even now Sho struggled to push past the perimeters of hierarchy to truly treat Jun as a friend instead of a prince, but the two undoubtedly trusted each other to a great extend; shown in Jun’s blatant declaration to bring Sho along as the sole soldier on his travels to the Janeite system. This fact however was still causing considerable stress to the king, who stared down at the young soldier with severity in his gaze.
“Jun is my only son” Satoshi said gravely. “He trusts you enough to bring you on this mission, so you will accompany him. But the most important thing, more than the treaty, is his safe return. Protect him with your life, understand?”
Sho opened his mouth slightly, wanting to respond but not entirely sure how at first. Then he bowed his head in acceptance of the task that had been assigned to him. “Understood, your majesty.”
